Your questions answered.
-
Can you really get me an agent or manager?
-
Yes! In the case your script is ready to sell, we can get it into the hands of top agents and managers and push them to read it immediately.
-
How is your service different than the others out there?
-
We offer simple pricing, streamlined services, and only allow you to submit a maximum of two screenplays. The consultation has no time limit within reason—some last an hour, others three hours. It depends what YOU need to know. This service is like taking an intensive screenwriting course using your own writing as the text book.
-
There are so many consultants! How can I tell if someone is for real?
-
First, figure out--do these people have real access to top agencies? When on the phone with a consultant, ask which major agencies they have current relationships with. Then ask “which agent?” for each. If they get flustered or change the subject, hang up. Second, check out their services and ask yourself—is this person JUST looking to make a quick buck? Do they sell twenty different “packages”? Do they push a bunch of “upsell” extras? Or do they provide a varied laundry list of services that seem based on making money any way possible? If so, keep looking.
-
What if you say the script isn’t ready? What do I get out of this?
-
Every writer is different, therefore every consultation is unique. Some clients have just completed their first screenplay others are published authors and produced playwrights still learning to think cinematically. Occasionally we work with writers who were once represented and looking to get back in the game and get a fresh perspective. Our goal is for every writer to identify and focus on their strengths, improve their skill, and deliver a more professional product next time around, whatever skill level they are starting at. At the end of the consult, clients agree with the assessment and are excited by having new insights into their screenplay and often, their overall writing.
-
After our consultation can I follow up with you?
-
Sure. You can email or call to discuss what you’re working on next—together, we an identify concepts that are surefire winners. Also included—Quick questions such as “this company requested my script, are they reputable?” can always be answered to help you cut through the Hollywood maze.
-
How good does a script need to be in order for you to recommend me to an agent?
-
It does not have to be great. It does not even have to be good. It just has to be commercial and competent. Do you think your script is at least commercial and competent?
-
My material isn’t what most would call “commercial”. Can you help me?
-
Yes. Just keep in mind, a screenwriter’s ability to go off the beaten path is proportionate to his or her level of talent, skill level, and understanding of cinema.
-
Is it easy to sell a great screenplay?
-
ABSOLUTELY! A great script always sells or is optioned. A-L-W-A-Y-S.
-
If you help me get represented and the script sells, do you take a cut?
-
Nope. It’s all yours.
-
Would you read my script for free and take a percentage of the sale instead?
-
Sorry, it’s just not how we work. We keep our prices incredibly low considering the value of our service. How much would it cost you to buy a plane ticket, come to L.A., get a hotel, and spend a week walking into every agency with your screenplay? $1,000? $2,000? And even if you spent the money, do you think it would ever end up in an agent’s hands? If you handed it to them, do you think they would read it?
-
Another consultant read my script and they said it was market ready! Why should I hire you?
-
If this person thought your script had potential on the spec market, wouldn’t they have referred it to someone who could sell it? And if they’re no longer in regular contact with the industry, how would they know what the spec market looks like in 2009?
-
How perfect does the script need to be before submitting?
-
There is virtually no work that will “put your script over the top” because if you have talent and/or if the concept is strong, we move on appropriately from there. Save that time and energy for a rewrite based on professional feedback.
-
I have more questions, can we discuss over the phone?
-
Sure, just shoot us a message and be sure to include your time zone.
-
What script should I submit? I have so many!
-
It’s always a good idea to submit your most commercial screenplay. A two script consultation is recommended if you bounce between genres and are not sure which you excel at writing. Shouldn’t you know which genre to focus on when you’re deciding which idea to tackle next?
-
How does the process work?
